iGaming Anchor Text Strategy: The Distribution That Ranks Without Burning

How to plan anchor text for casino and betting sites: target-level distribution, the exact-match budget, cluster thinking, and the ratios we use on live campaigns.

Ask ten SEOs about anchor text ratios and you’ll get ten confident numbers, most of them folklore. Here’s the uncomfortable truth from auditing gambling sites for years: almost every casino site that gets hit by a link-spam action shows the same wound — not bad links, but good links carrying an anchor profile no editorial process could have produced. Anchor text is where casino link building goes to die, precisely because it’s the variable buyers control directly and therefore over-use.

This is the framework we run on managed campaigns. It’s less exciting than a magic ratio. It also survives updates.

Why anchors are the highest-risk variable you control

When you buy a placement, you choose the site, the target page and the anchor. Site quality is externally constrained — there are only so many good publishers. Target choice is constrained by your own architecture. The anchor is the one field where nothing stops you writing “best crypto casino no deposit bonus” — and because it’s the field that feels most like SEO, it’s where impatience concentrates.

Google has known this for fifteen years. Anchor distribution is trivially observable, cheap to evaluate at scale, and in a niche as adversarial as gambling, heavily weighted as a manipulation signal. An editorial world produces messy, brand-heavy, often lazy anchors. A purchased world produces keyword-dense, distributionally impossible ones. The gap between those two worlds is measurable, and you are on one side of it.

Think per target page, not per domain

The classic mistake: managing “the site’s anchor ratio” as one bucket. Penalties and demotions in this space are overwhelmingly page-level first. A domain with 60% branded anchors overall can still have a money page whose incoming anchors are 70% exact match — and that page is the unit Google evaluates for that query.

So the operating unit of anchor planning is the target URL. Every money page gets its own ledger: every link built to it, with anchor, date, and linking-domain quality. No anchor decision is made without the ledger open. This sounds bureaucratic. It is. It’s also the only way a profile stays coherent once more than one person or vendor is building links — and reconstructing it later, after something breaks, costs fifty times more than maintaining it.

The distribution that works

Numbers below are operating ranges we hold money pages inside, not laws of physics. Context — SERP, market, page age — moves them at the margins.

Branded and URL anchors: 55–70% of everything

“CasinoBrand”, “casinobrand.com”, “www.casinobrand.com”, “CasinoBrand review site” — the boring backbone. This is what real coverage looks like: journalists and bloggers overwhelmingly link with names, not keywords. High branded share is not wasted budget; it’s what buys you the right to spend commercial anchors later. New sites especially should overweight branded early — a domain whose first forty links include fifteen keyword anchors has written its own case file.

One nuance for affiliates: if your brand contains your keyword (“BestSlotsUK”), your branded anchors are partially commercial whether you like it or not. Tilt the rest of the distribution even more conservative to compensate.

Topical and partial-match: 20–30%

The workhorses: “casino payout comparisons”, “guide to fast-withdrawal casinos”, “their analysis of UK slot sites”. These anchors carry relevance without tripping exactness, and their natural home is mid-tier placements — solid guest posts where the surrounding paragraph does the semantic work. Vary them relentlessly; five different partial phrasings beat one phrase five times, because repetition of any string is itself the footprint.

Generic and naked: 10–15%

“here”, “this site”, “read more”, bare URLs. Real profiles are full of them. Their job is statistical honesty — they exist because lazy linking exists, and a profile with zero laziness is a profile with zero reality.

Exact match: 1–5%, treated as a budget

The scarce resource. Our operating rule: exact-match anchors are spent, not used — each one allocated deliberately, logged, and placed only where three conditions hold:

  1. The linking page is genuinely strong — verified traffic, real rankings, ideally topical overlap with the query.
  2. The target page hasn’t received an exact-match anchor recently (we space them by months, not weeks).
  3. The page’s ledger shows the addition keeps exact share inside the band.

Cluster thinking: anchors as a team sport

Money keywords don’t live alone — “fast payout casino” sits in a cluster with speed, method and limit variants. Plan anchors across the cluster, not the head term:

  • Distribute partial-match anchors across the cluster’s vocabulary so the target page accumulates semantic breadth instead of one repeated string.
  • Let supporting content absorb informational anchors (“withdrawal time comparison data”) and pass strength internally — internal links can be as exact as you like, which is precisely how you compensate for external restraint. Your external anchors whisper; your internal anchors state.
  • When a cluster page starts ranking top 10, stop pushing commercial anchors at it and let branded momentum carry it. The most common self-inflicted wound we see is the celebratory exact-match link fired at a page that had just reached page one.

Special cases worth calling out

  • New domains (first 6 months): 70%+ branded/URL, zero exact match. You have no trust to spend yet. Anchor aggression on an infant domain is the fastest confession available.
  • Multi-geo sites: run the ledger per market as well as per page. A German money page’s anchors live in German; “beste online casinos” arriving via an English-language placement in Norway is incoherence you’re paying for.
  • Recovering sites: after a link-spam hit and cleanup, the rebuild period is branded-only until commercial queries stabilise. Rebuilding with the anchor mix that caused the hit is a rerun with a shorter second act.
  • Competitor anchor gaps: pull anchor distributions for the pages holding your target positions. Occasionally you’ll find they rank with less aggression than you planned — which means the SERP is won on link quality, not anchors, and your exact budget should be even smaller.

The audit cadence

Quarterly, per money page: recalculate distribution from the live ledger plus crawl data (links you didn’t build count too — including negative-SEO noise, which in gambling is background weather). Flag any page drifting toward the top of its bands, cool it with branded volume, and log the correction. Fifteen minutes per page, four times a year, versus a recovery project. The trade isn’t close.

Anchor strategy is restraint, systematised. The sites that dominate gambling SERPs for years aren’t the ones that found a cleverer ratio — they’re the ones that never needed to explain their profile to anyone. If you’d rather the ledger, the spacing and the restraint were somebody’s actual job, that’s what campaigns are.
